Insecure Episode 9: Lowkey Trying

Did we just open this episode with the morning after... and then a few days after? I lowkey thought Issa was having a dream sequence, but she and Lawrence really are hitting it off again. Yay! And, of course, once again, Nathan pops up with a text at the most inconvenient time. At it like an ex to pop up and ruin the moment? I love this transparent conversation between Issa and Lawrence, though. It’s good to lay everything out on the table and make sure that you’re on the same page. You can’t be out her re-sparking flames when there are loose ends.

Molly is finally getting the help she needs

Molly is back in the therapist’s office again, thank God. Talk about you and Issa. Talk about what happened in Mexico. And yes for Dr. Rhonda showing Molly about how she puts up walls when she’s angry. Tell her! “Does your relationship with her still serve you?” and “Do you want to do the work of repairing the relationship?” Doc is out her asking the important questions.

Issa + Molly

She tries to call Kelli for man advice- something that she would normally call Molly about- and she’s unavailable. So she calls her cool brother. He’s not too helpful at all. But Issa, please leave the Nathan thing where it is. She imagines that she calls Molly, which is super awkward, but also great for her making the first move. Molly really is the only person who can understand what’s going on with her. I’m so glad she imagined Molly’s crazy response. I’m also glad that we see a repeat of this plaid shirt in their meetup scene. Too many times TV shows forget that real people repeat outfits.

Molly makes this meetup really awkward. Like, girl, you know what you’re here for, get to talking! I need to try a light skinned mimosa, though. It looks like that’s all they needed to get the conversation rolling. They never actually resolved anything, though. Molly seems to be learning to bite her tongue about Nathan, though. I’m glad.

Molly + Andrew

Andrew is good at talking to Molly and encouraging her to take responsibility. Molly refuses to be the bigger person and bring up the real issues, but maybe therapy will help her open up and let her walls down more. Molly said the convo felt superficial, though? Why is she such a hater?

Issa

Issa is on her grind and her assistant is funny. She’s on her entrepreneurial event planning grind. It’s cute to see Lawrence excited to call her and catch her up on his day. They’re both doing well. Issa and Molly seem to both be with guys who care about them as individuals and their friendship. Issa thought that the conversation with Molly went well. Uh oh... Molly didn’t feel the same way.

Nate is still feeling Issa. Biting his lip like that when he’s talking to her... boyyyyyyyy... I’m glad that Issa told him that she and Lawrence are back together. Nate, why are you feeling salty? You ghosted her and called Lawrence “sometimey”? Yes, Issa. Call him out!

And then Nate let her know that he found out that he is bipolar. I’m glad that he finally told her what was going on. That awkward moment needed to happen because his actions were very “sometimey”, but at least now we know why. And now she and Nathan can move on in a healthy way and so many unanswered questions are now answered.

Molly

Molly doesn’t want to hang out with Andrew’s brother again after the Mexico incident. She’s at the house with Andrew and then Nathan and Issa show up. Awkward. Issa and Nathan stay for dinner and some drinks. They’re all hanging out and everyone is chilling and Issa and Molly are reminiscing. I never would’ve guessed that Bernie Sanders was 6’0”, though. And damn, Molly accidentally texts Issa what she meant to send to Andrew. Ugh, Molly, why you gotta be straight trash right now?

“Maybe who you are now and who I am now just don’t fit anymore.” Umm, Molly, WHO IS YOU? Do you miss when Issa was stuck and confused that much? Y’all all still have the same mutual friends, you could both easily say “I’m sorry”, kiss, and make up. Also, Issa actually said “I love you, girl” at brunch and you made it seem like y’all were cool. Ugh, Molly is so frustrating.

I actually don’t mind if Molly and Issa grow apart a little. They’re getting older and doing their own things. It isn’t a clean and total break but they don’t need to do everything together all the time either. I’m down with Issa finding some new friends and Molly getting her therapy on and building with Andrew. Issa, how does moving to San Fran with Lawrence sound? Hmmm.

Also, random sidenote: Whatever happened to Molly’s dog? Biggie Smalls?
